Learning Technologies- Blog virgin

Never thought I would be writing a blog but here I am writing my very own blog for the first time. Yes that's right I am a blog virgin. So the reason for me setting up and writing my own blog is for an assignment I have to complete for one of my units at university. I am in my second year of my bachelor of Education (Primary) and I am completing the unit 'Learning Technologies' which is pretty self explanatory, learning about technologies but focusing on how these technologies can be used within a classroom.

The students of today are children of the digital generation, they have been born into a world of technology. Paper, pencils, chalkboards and text books are NOT going to engage and satisfy these 'digital natives', I know this because I am one of them myself. I have recently completed my HSC in 2009 and am very aware of how tedious, boring and disengaging classrooms can be, especially when they are being run by 'digital immigrants' (people who have not been born into the world of technology). I know only too well what it feels like to be sitting in a mind numbing classroom listening to a teacher who is talking about the most irrelevant stuff, well relevant to our exams but not relevant to anything else we will experience in the rest of our lives. I know exactly what was boring and why it was boring from my own personal experience. If teachers want to engage students they have to link it to the real world, they have to show us how its relevant and worthwhile. Or even just make it more exciting or interesting.

I refuse to be one of those teachers who day after day goes into the classroom and instructs the students to pull out a text book and answer the questions in essay style. I will not be one of those teachers. I will be one of those teachers who inspires students to have a go, motivating them to strive to achieve their best. I will have technology incorporated into every lesson possible. And lastly, I will be successful at doing so.
